HOMILY FOR FRIDAY, FIFTH WEEK OF LENT YEAR A

Jeremiah 20:10-13; Psalm 17; John 10:31-42

Fr. Daniel Evbotokhai

The basic theme today is persecution. The Prophet Jeremiah is being persecuted by the people but he placed his trust in God. A pointer to Jesus’ persecution. The Psalm is a prayer of confidence in God by one who is being persecuted. In the gospel Jesus was being persecuted by some of the Jews; He placed his trust in God and was saved from them until the hour of his glory. Persecution for Christians is not a possibility, it’s a promise, it’s not a maybe, it’s a surely! We cannot please all men but we can be a blessing to many. No matter the persecutions we shall be saved if we place our trust in him. In you Lord I put my trust let me never be put to shame.

Fr. Ephraim ITAMAN

1.Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…Matthew 10:28
2.One of the challenges that will always confront as Christians is persecution
3.People will persecute us usually for two reasons:
because they misunderstand us
when we refuse to compromise our belief.
4.Jesus calls himself the Son of God and the Jews stoned him. They called it blasphemy.
5.We see a similar experience with the Prophet Jeremiah in the first reading who was persecuted for speaking the truth.
6.The truth gives courage. It in fact, intoxicates. Hence, Jesus and the prophet Jeremiah were ready to stand for the truth at the expense of their lives. Same with all the martyrs.
7.The Jews thought they could kill the truth, but the truth cannot die.
8.We are challenged today to examine, how well we know God, the Truth.
9.The Litmus test is, are we willing to die for the Truth; the faith we profess, if need be?

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

May God give us the confidence to stay strong and hope in him when the world persecute us for no reason. I know that the Lord will judge in favour, Because he knows what is right. Because he knows our hearts, for he has examined us completely and he found no evil desire in us.
