2 Kings 2:1, 6-14; Psalm 31; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18🗣🔥🔥🔥
In the first reading, we are presented with the narrative of the completion of Elijah’s work. At his completion Elijah handed over to Elisha thereafter he was taken up to heaven. Most times people are not interested in how we started; but how we shall end. May we find heaven after our earthly sojourn. The gospel today gives us a different theme, namely, the practice of our religious worship. Jesus reminds us of the three “hall-marks” of genuine worship: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Jesus warns his disciples not to indulge in any form of display so as to attract the admiration of others. The main point is that fasting and other works of piety are directed towards God, not man. Therefore, we should practice our religious worship base on interior conviction and not mere external display, pretense, drama and self-advertisement.
PRAYER FOR TRANSFORMATION
Open my eyes, Lord, to see my true thoughts and motivations. I don’t want to hold on to the self-righteous things I consider worthy but which you have called filthy rags. I want to be emptied of any pretense and reproachful attitudes toward others. Release me, Father, from the grip of negative thoughts and exhibitions. Let your cleansing blood wash over me now. You can remove the selfish motivations deep within me for you know every corner of my heart. I don’t want them anymore! I ask for your forgiveness. Transform me into your image and likeness. Amen.
