HOMILY FOR TUESDAY: SIXTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Micah 7:14-15, 18-20; Psalm 85; Matthew 12:46-50

In the first reading, Micah asked for God’s pardon for the sins of the people. He called them to obedience if they must continue to enjoy God’s favour. Remember that in Genesis, disobedience denied them a place in the family of God. Thus, Jesus says in the Gospel that obedience to the will of God qualifies us to be called, his brothers and sisters and mother. The family of God is the largest family in creation, unlimited by space, region and blood. We are related to God not by virtue of blood but by obedience to the father’s will (John 1:13). If disobedience disqualifies them in Genesis; obedience can qualify us in this end time.

Prayer — Ps.85 4-9

Restore us again, God our Savior,  and put away your displeasure toward us.  Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations?  Will you not revive us again,  that your people may rejoice in you?  Show us your unfailing love, Lord,  and grant us your salvation.  I will listen to what God the Lord says;  he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants but let them not turn to folly.  Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,  that his glory may dwell in our land.
