HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE SIXTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Jer 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13 · Matthew 13:10-17

Jesus says in the Gospel: “I speak to them in Parable because seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.” This people see and not perceive, hear and not understand because  they have rigidly bound themselves within the confines of the Mosaic Law and refuse to accept the message of Jesus which is a “fulfillment” of the law. Today, people find it difficult to assimilate God’s truth because they are blinded by their background, prejudice and bias. Others have unteachable spirit, they will never understand no matter your explanation. This kind of spirit is a result of pride or fear for something new. Just as the people tried to replace God in the first reading; there are those who have replaced the revealed truth with their personal knowledge or judgment.  Thus, Jesus speaks in parable to challenge us out of our laziness and self-bias into seeking the deeper meaning of things.

A PRAYER FOR THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE

Absolute and all knowing God, Nothing is hidden from Your sight. In the prescience since the beginning, All knowledge existed within You. Kindly share Your knowledge with me, Making me aware of what is meant to be, Permitting my soul to understand it, And wisdom to agree with its outcome. Provide me with the gift of discretion, To prudently apply received knowledge, To ensure the fulfillment of Your Will. Your knowledge shines forth forever!
