Today we celebrate the feast of St. James the Apostles. St James and his brother were the sons of Zebedee. Jesus referred to them as “Sons of Thunder” because of their penchant for rash, emotional reactions and decisions. In the gospel, we see their mother coming to Jesus to ask that her sons (James and John) sit at his right and left in heaven. People are quick to ask for their reward in any spiritual or temporal engagement and that is why development suffers. Jesus ceases this opportunity to educate them. For Jesus this reward can be granted but man should not be motivated by gains but by the spirit of humble service. There is so much corruption today because people are motivated by gains and not service. Even before service is delivered the reward and gains are already shared. Beloved, an apostle should not be motivated by gain and so St Paul says in the first reading that because he serves as a witness he shall be raised to life with Christ. Beloved in Christ, humble service is an important characteristic of the Kingdom. St. James eventually served and died a martyr. The measure of a man’s greatness is not the number of servants he has, but the number of people he serves.
An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
