Homily For Monday: Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 13:1-11; Psalm – Deuteronomy 32; Matthew 13:31-35

Jesus preached about the kingdom and its proximity during the course of his earthly ministry.  Jesus used different images and parables to speak to the people about the kingdom and how we should conduct ourselves in order to enter into this kingdom. Today’s gospel presents us with two of such parables: the Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matt.13:31-32) and the Parable of the Yeast (Matt.13:33).  The mustard seed is small but produces a big shrub and bread is flat unless yeast is added to make it rise. Do not be discouraged with small beginnings. With one FAITHFUL believer the whole world can start believing. For unfaithfulness, the Lord dejected the people of Israel in the first reading. The Psalm, taken from Deuteronomy, continues this theme – “You forget the God who fathered you. Let us be faithful to God and we shall grow and glow.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.
