HOMILY FOR MONDAY EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

JEREMIAH 28:1-17; PSALM 119; MATTHEW 14:22-36

In the first reading we are presented with a false prophet and a true prophet. Hananiah gave false prophecy and he was believed, loved and accepted in the temple. Jeremiah the true prophet suffered rejection. Eventually, Hananiah died for leading the people astray. We still have the crisis of false and true prophet today. We must learn to fix our eyes on Jesus and not on a prophet. A true prophet will draw you to God and not to himself. When Peter focused on Jesus in the gospel reading he expressed power over the water; but the very moment his faith fails he began to sink. If you put your trust in man; you will sink. If you rely on your own energy; you will sink. But if you trust in God and rely on his words you will be saved.

PRAYER FOR TRUST

O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your hand, Your purpose, Your will through all things.
