HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE NINETEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (FEAST OF ST LAWRENCE, DEACON & MARTYR)

2Corinthians 9:6-10; Psalm 111; John 12:24-26

In the first reading Paul encourages us give alms to the poor and to be people of deep faith for there is a reward that awaits us. St. Lawrence was a lover of the poor. He lived a fruitful life and a generous life through his commitment to the people and the offering of his life in Martyrdom. In this light, the gospel invites us to be like the grain of wheat because unless we die to the ways of this life, and are reborn of the true and everlasting life, we will be lost forever. What is man without eternal life? Lawrence lost his earthly life and woke up to life eternal. For Lawrence eternal life is of greater value than our present life. Thus, let us spend our earthly life in such a way that we will be relevant in eternity.

Saint Lawrence, Martyr and Deacon

PATRON SAINT OF OWNERS AND WORKERS OF FOOD BUSINESSES

Graciously obtain for me from God those favours and graces which I need so much in the trials, miseries and afflictions in life, particularly (name it).

O glorious Saint Lawrence, Martyr and Deacon, who, being subjected to the most bitter torments, didst not lose thy faith nor thy constancy in confessing Jesus Christ, obtain in like manner for us such an active and solid faith, that we shall never be ashamed to be true followers of Jesus Christ, and fervent Christians in word and in deed.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be
V. Pray for us, O holy Lawrence,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, the grace to quench the flames of our vices, Thou who didst enable blessed Lawrence to overcome his fiery torments. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
