HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY INTO HEAVEN (AUGUST 15)

Revelations 11:19, 12:1-6, 10; Psalm 45; 1Corinthians 15:20-26; Luke 1:39-56

**************

The first reading presents us with a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Faced with the red dragon, this woman was moved by the power of God to a place prepared for her. This revelation points to Mary as the Queen of Heaven and the response to our psalm says “on your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir”.  In the second reading, Paul says Jesus Christ is the first-fruit and the first to rise from the dead. Therefore, those who belong to him will also triumph over death. Mary belonged to Christ and so she triumphed over death body and soul. The Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”. ( Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XII issued November 1, 1950).  Beloved, we must imitate Mary in every respect so that at the end of our earthly life we may also be glorified!  The readings today, finally concludes with a hymn of praise from the gospel reading. This hymn is popularly called the Magnificat. Mary continues to render ceaseless praise to God for the wonders worked in her life. As we choose to imitate Mary, may the hymn of praise never cease from our mouth. Amen. MARY ASSUMED INTO HEAVEN, PRAY FOR US.

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.
