HOMILY FOR TUESDAY, TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Ezekiel 28:1-10; Psalm – Deuteronomy 32; Matthew 19:23-30

****************

In the first reading, the prince of Tyre was clouded by his possessions and he looked down on man and God. He was punished by God for that reason. Beloved, wealth is good but don’t allow it to destroy your relationship with man and God. Don’t look down on anybody because you are rich. Precisely because of this Jesus tells us in the gospel that it is difficult for a rich man to enter heaven. There are many wealthy people who are very humble; you too can be one. Let us seek to have a balanced attitude towards wealth so that we don’t miss our ultimate goal in life. We need possessions to live comfortably in this life but we need Christ to live peacefully for all time. God bless you.

LET US PRAY

Lord Jesus, when you walked the earth, your humility and simplicity obscured your Kingship. Your meekness confused the arrogant, hindering them from grasping your purpose, your nobleness attending to the destitute. Teach me to model after your eminence, to subject my human nature to humility and simplicity. Grant me a natural inclination to never view myself greater than anyone. Banish all lingering sparks of self-importance that could elevate me greater than you. Let my heart always imitate your humility. Amen.
