HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE TWENTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

1 CORINTHIANS 15:35-37, 42-49; PSALM 55; LUKE 8:4-15

Like seeds the word of God is spread across the world. However, there are factors that determine positive growth. The quality of the soil determines the growth that will be actualized. Beloved, what kind of soil are we? How do we receive the word of God? Our modern world is full of distractions; the rocks, thorns, birds and many others that militate against the growth of God’s word in our hearts.  The challenge is for us to make ourselves the rich soil which will yield a rich harvest of faith. Therefore, rephrasing the words of Paul in the first reading, we can say in conclusion that in order for us to make ourselves the rich soil we must die to ourselves. In other words, those things which hold us to the ways of this world must die in order for us to rise with Christ enjoy eternal life.

LET US PRAY (Special Prayer for Edo State Election)

Loving God, creator of this world who is the source of our wisdom and understanding, watch over Edo state on this day of our gubernatorial election. We give thanks for the right to vote. Help us to hold this privilege and responsibility with the care and awareness it merits, realizing that our vote matters and that it is an act of faith. Grant us peaceful election today and help us to see how our faith informs our principles and actions. Amen
