HOMILY FOR TUESDAY FEAST OF SAINTS MICHAEL, GABRIEL & RAPHAEL, ARCHANGELS

DANIEL 7:9-10, 13-14 PSALM 138; JOHN 1:47-51

Angels are messengers from God, they appeared frequently in Scripture. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael had important roles in the history of salvation. Jesus described them in the gospel as those who dwell in the Lord’s presence and act as his messengers.

Saint Michael is the “Prince of the Heavenly Host,” the leader of all the angels. Michael means “Who is like God?” He stood against Lucifer when he rebelled against God. Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince” who defends Israel against its enemies; He is invoked for protection against Satan and all evil.

Saints Gabriel is well known in the scriptures especially in the narrative of Jesus’ birth. His name means “God’s strength.” In Luke 1:19 he identified himself and his office; he says “I am Gabriel, who stand before God.” Gabriel appeared in Daniel’s visions, announcing Michael’s role in God’s plan. He represents good news and spiritual strength. He strengthened Jesus during his agony in the garden of Gethsemane.

Saint Raphael identified himself in Tob 12:15; he says: “I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord.” His name means “God has healed” he healed Tobias of his blindness. Thus, he is the angel of divine healing and acts of mercy.

Beloved, many people in scriptures succeeded because they trusted and believed in God’s messenger.  Saint Joseph trusted the angel who appeared to him in a dream.  How deep is your faith in God’s holy messengers?

Today is a special day for us in Auchi Diocese as we mark and celebrate the birthday of our Bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel G. Dunia. May God continue to bless him, strengthen him and grant him many happy years ahead. May Saint Gabriel, your patron saint continue to intercede for you, strengthen you spiritually and bring good new to you! God bless you.
