HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (MEMORIAL OF ST JEROME, PRIEST & DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH)

JOB 9:1-16; PSALM 88; LUKE 9:57-62

Jesus invites us all to follow him; he makes us to understand that his call is more important than any other task. Service of God takes precedence over all other services or obligations. In the gospel some men gave excuses. What are our excuses today? The saints are products of absolute dedication and discipleship. Today the Church celebrates St. Jerome, renowned for his extraordinary depth of learning and translations of the Bible into Latin. He once said, “I interpret as I should, following the command of Christ: ‘Search the Scriptures,’ and ‘Seek and you shall find.’ For if, as Paul says, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the man who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” Beloved, what are our excuses for not studying the Scriptures today? Jesus says; “no one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” St. Jerome, pray for us.

Let us pray

Dear God, I admit that reading the Bible is challenging for me. Yet I desire to be more than a carrier of Your Word. Give me a hunger and thirst for Your Truth. Lead me by the power of Your Spirit to study and apply Your Word to my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
