HOMILY FOR TUESDAY THE THIRTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (MEMORIAL OF POPE ST LEO THE GREAT)

TITUS 2:1-8, 11-14; PSALM 37; LUKE 17:7-10

In the first reading Paul calls us to behave and act as Christians not because of any immediate gain but because of the glory that await us. Similarly, Jesus in the gospel deepens this understanding when he says “We are worthless slaves, we have only done what we ought to have done!” Often times people do things because of the recognition attached to it or because they want to be praised by others. Such people are motivated by human rewards or awards. Beloved, a true Christian should have sincere humility that does not depend on acknowledgement; whether it comes or not. His or her actions should be motivated by eternal glory. The very moment we seek and desire earthly relevance we reduce our eternal chances.

Act of Humility

O divine Lord, how shall I dare to approach you, I who have so often offended you? No, Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof; but speak only the word and my soul shall be healed.
