HOMILY FOR THURSDAY  THE THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT (17, DECEMBER 2020)

GENESIS 49:2, 9-10; PSALM 72; MATTHEW 1:1-17

In the first reading we see Jacob blessing his twelve sons prior to his death. The reading focuses on the blessing of his son Judah. Jacob says that the sceptre shall not pass from Judah until the one to whom it rightfully belong comes. The Gospel continued with this theme; narrating the genealogy of Jesus Christ from Abraham. We are told that Judah was the great-grandson of Abraham and is one of the fore-fathers of Jesus. Therefore, Jesus is the one to whom the sceptre rightfully belongs. Beloved, the power of parental blessings should never be downplayed or undermined. Every parent, to large extent, shares with God, a certain degree of influence over the destiny of their children. Parents bless your children. The blessing of Jacob favoured the fourth child Judah who was obedient, humble and supportive to his father. The first, second and third sons of Jacob did not enjoy this favour because of disobedience.  Children, if we must enjoy parental blessings we must be humble, supportive and obedient.

THE MEMORARE

Remember, o most gracious virgin mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implore thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, o virgin of virgins, my mother, to thee I come, before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the word incarnate, despise not my petition but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
