HOMILY FOR THURSDAY (DECEMBER 24, 2020) THE FOURTH WEEK OF ADVENT (Morning Mass)

2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16; Ps 89; Luke 1:67-79

Zechariah the priest in the gospel proclaims a hymn of praise to God, this hymn is commonly called the Benedictus. It is a blessing of thanksgiving for what God has done for him. The Benedictus also forms part of the morning prayer for the Church and many daily. Beloved, we all have reasons to thank the Lord. Zechariah blesses God and says that he has come to the help of his people by raising up one from the house of David. The first reading says this house shall be the one all people will come. We thank God for the many blessings we have received and the fulfilment of his promises. We thank the Lord for sending Jesus into the world to save us. May we come to realize the fuller meaning of the Saviour’s birth. Amen.

Let us pray

Come quickly, we pray, Lord Jesus, and do not delay, that those who trust in your compassion may find solace and relief in your coming. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
