HOMILY FOR FRIDAY:  THE SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME  (22/1/2021)

 Hebrews 8:6-13; Psalm 85; Mark 3:13-19

***********

In contrast to the old covenant agreement between God and the people of Israel which was constantly being broken; the first reading tells us that Christ is the new and everlasting covenant. The new covenant took the place of the old covenant. The sacrifice of animals was substituted by a new sacrifice- the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The new covenant was initiated at the last supper “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). The new covenant enables us to establish personal relationship with God. It makes us one body, one spirit in Christ. In the gospel, Jesus manifested this relationship in choosing his twelve closest companions. The number twelve refers to the twelve tribes of Israel and Jesus’ use of it reveals his intention to create a new Israel, the new people of God established as a Church. Beloved, the old Israel failed to keep the old covenant. As the new Israel, is there any hope?

Prayer

Lord God, I ask for protection as I begin this day. You are my hiding place, and under your wings I can always find refuge. Protect me from trouble wherever I go, and keep evil far from me. Give me a humble heart to yield to your instructions at all times, help me to obey you, teach me to be faithful to your covenant and let me follow when you lead. Amen.
