JEREMIAH 18:18-20; PSALM 31; MATTHEW 20:17-28
“My enemies are digging a pit for me”. ‘Come on,’ they said, ‘let us concoct a plot against Jeremiah. The plotting against Jeremiah reminds us of the plotting that will take place against Jesus in the Passion Week. However, Jeremiah prayed to God for intervention. Today’s psalm is a prayer for such intervention it says; “Save me in your love, O Lord. Release me from the snares they have hidden for you are my refuge, Lord.” God is our unfailing refuge. Thus, rather than us contending over position, wealth and privileges like the two sons of Zebedee. Let us give ourselves to the service of our friends and neighbour and gain eternal life.
Let us pray
Father, so many of us live in a state of discontent when the desire for things consumes our thoughts and actions. We enjoy material things and their day to day function in our lives, but we want to place a higher value on greater pursuits such as growing friendships, solidifying marriage relations, developing godly character, giving without expecting to receive, standing for and giving to worthy causes, especially those of eternal value. Lord thwart the path of the enemies towards us and help us to realize that our all-sufficiency is in you and that you will bless us according to your riches in glory. Amen.
