ACTS 7:51-8:1; PSALM 31; JOHN 6:30-35
Martyrdom is one of the features of spiritually matured Christians. They are not afraid to accept death for the sake of Christ. They do not deny Christ in the face of dungeon, fire and sword. The first reading today describes the martyrdom of Stephen. During his trial he calls those who arrested him “stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit”. Although they are physically circumcised, their behaviour is more like the uncircumcised pagans around them. Often times we tend to behave like unbelievers. The Martyrdom of Stephen calls us to submit our stiff-neck to the sweet and easy yoke of Christ. Jesus says in the gospel; “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.” Beloved, resist the world and seek the things that make for eternal life.
LET US PRAY
Lord, be a rock of refuge for me, a mighty stronghold to save me. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me, guide me, for the sake of your name. Into your hands I commend my spirit. Amen.
