HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF MARY MOTHER OF THE CHURCH (24/5/2021)

Genesis 3:9-15, 20; Psalm 87; John 19:25-34

Today we celebrate the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church – Mater Ecclesiae.  Mary’s role in the Church is inseparable from her union with Christ. In the gospel we are presented with the scene on Calvary. Jesus was mindful of his mother and placed her in the care of one of the Twelve, with the instruction that she was now his mother. That disciple represents all of us and we too are told that Mary is our mother and so we look to her for comfort, guidance and support as we would the woman who gave birth to us. Mary is called “Mother of the Church.” because she was present at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit filled the lives of the followers of Jesus who became His Church by the Spirit’s power and presence. Mary was present when the Spirit brought to birth the Church of her Divine Son. The Holy Father wisely has associated Mary’s feast with Pentecost.

LET US PRAY

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
