HOMILY FOR MONDAY 17TH WEEK MEMORIAL OF SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNE (26/7/2021)

Exodus 32:15-24, 30-34; Psalm 106; Matthew 13:31-35

Today’s gospel presents us with two parables: the Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matt.13:31-32) and the Parable of the Yeast (Matt.13:33).  The mustard seed is small but produces a big tree. It does not become a big tree overnight. Be patient, with time you shall grow higher, bigger and greater. Similarly, bread is flat unless yeast is added to make it rise. Continue to labour God shall bless you with increase. Beloved, do not be discouraged with humble beginnings. Again, both parables refer to the kingdom which begins with Christ and his Apostles but has grown bigger and greater today! We must not stunt this growth by our character and disposition. Unlike the Israelites who worshipped the golden calf in the first reading let us remain faithful to God in all seasons and we shall grow and glow at all times.

Today the Church celebrates the memorial of saints Joachim and Anne the grandparents of Jesus. Its a reminder to honour one’s grandparents and the elderly around us. For Pope Francis just as the elderly need young people, young people need the elderly, “especially in this throw-away culture.” If young people and elderly don’t meet and talk, Pope Francis says “history does not go on, life does not go on. We need to resume this: It is a challenge for our culture. Grandparents have the right to dream while watching young people, and young people have the right to prophecy by taking sap from grandparents,”

LET US PRAY

Father, you have called us to grow in grace and to increase in wisdom. Help us to conquer all factors against our growth and by the power of the Holy Spirit may we grow higher, greater and bigger in Jesus’ name. Amen!
