1 Timothy 1:1-2, 12-14; Psalm 16; Luke 6:39-42
“Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? We have the tendency to notice the faults of others more easily than our own faults. Today’s Gospel is an attack on the hypocrites who attack others for their small flaws while ignoring their own massive ones. Those who judge others, but do not evaluate themselves. Again, since the speck is in the eye it is a metaphor for how such speck can blind one. Thus, Jesus asked his disciples: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?” Beloved, we must remove the speck in our own eyes before we can help others. Following this pattern, St. Paul in the first reading acknowledged his past ordeals and expressed how he was shown mercy before adressing Timothy.
