HOMILY FOR MONDAY, THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT (29/11/2021)

Isaiah 2:1-5; Psalm 122; Matthew 8:5-11

The centurion in today’s gospel expressed sincere faith in Jesus and his word. He said to him,  “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.” Do we still believe in the healing power of Jesus? How much faith do we still express on his word? Today’s psalm says “I rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’” Only those who have faith in God’s word will rejoice at the mention of God’s house. How do we react each time we are invited to God’s house? Do we find the Church boring or interesting? If we find it boring; then we must examine our faith. Again, Isaiah in his vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem reminds us of the centrality and importance of God’s house. In our doings; are we still conscious of this? As we prepare for Christmas, we pray in the words of today’s gospel acclamation;  “God of hosts, bring us back: let your face shine on us and we shall be saved” (PS.79:4).

LET US PRAY

Keep us alert, we pray, O Lord our God, as we await the advent of Christ your Son, so that, when he comes and knocks, he may find us watchful in prayer and exultant in his praise. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
