HOMILY FOR SATURDAY DECEMBER 18 2021 THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT

Jeremiah 23:5-8; Psalm 72; Matthew 1:18-24

Jeremiah prophesied that a descendent of King David will reign as the true king. This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. However, this did not just happen at random; the gospel speaks of the union of Joseph and Mary. It hinted on the tight spot Joseph found himself due to Mary’s pregnancy. Nevertheless, after the angel’s ministration in a dream Joseph resolved to align with the divine plan. So, it was equally revealed in a dream that divorce is not an option. What is our attitude towards the Church’s teaching on divorce?  Joseph was an obedient man. If we do not obey God we can’t fulfill his mandate. Let us obey God’s will and encourage others to do the same.

Let us pray

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we, who are weighed down from of old by slavery beneath the yoke of sin, may be set free by the newness of the long-awaited Nativity of your Only Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
