The cost of truth
Today we have the narrative of the death of John the Baptist. He was beheaded by Herod because he confronted Herod with the truth. We may behead man but no matter how hard we try we cannot behead the truth. The advances of Herod were rash. Christians must avoid making rash promises or giving rash judgments. In giving judgment; God was not rash towards David. Despite his sins; the first reading recalls the wonderful deeds he did. It shows that David was a man who earnestly desired God and served the people. Unlike Herod, David was weak not wicked. He persistently asked for God’s mercy and the bible says “the Lord forgave David’s sin and established his power forever…” (Eccl.47:11)
