HOMILY FOR TUESDAY THE FIFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II (8/2/2022)

1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30; Psalm 84; Mark 7:1-13

The Pharisees saw that some of the disciples of Jesus were eating with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. Our hands may be clean, our pots and cups may be clean but the account we shall give to God shall be based on the cleanliness of our hearts. Nevertheless, inasmuch as we care for the earth and our hygiene we must also ensure that we do not downplay the weightier matters of our faith. Christianity is about God’s truth not man’s tradition. As clean as the Pharisees hands were, they often used them to pick and point, to finger and accuse, to indict and prosecute. We are often guilty of these vices. Like Solomon in the first reading we pray that may hear us and forgive us our transgressions so we may not fall out of God’s promises.

LET US PRAY

Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care, that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace, they may be defended always by your protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
