HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE TENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (ST. BARNABAS)

Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3; Psalm 98; Matthew 5:33-37

 BE TRUTHFUL

Matthew 5:33-37 presents us with Christ teaching about vows. He says “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.” Although we are not perfect,  Christ challenges us to be honest, upright and just. Do not make a promise to anyone if you know you will not fulfill it. Do not give anyone a false sense of security.

Similarly, in our relationship with God, let us strive to fulfill our promises. Ecclesiastes 5:4-7 says “ When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.  It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands?  Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.” As Christian we  must be truthful in all circumstances.

Lastly, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St Barnabas today; the first reading describes some of the work done by Barnabas in spreading the Christ’s message in different communities. He was dedicated to his duty; he was Paul’s companion and helper on his first missionary journey and returned with him to Jerusalem. His first remarkable deed was when he sold his belongings and gave the money to the common fund. He was martyred in Cyprus and today we celebrate his victorious blood. Let us fear God and imitate Barnabas’s words and deeds.

LET US PRAY

Father, have mercy and save us. Guide us to do your will at all times, by the power of the Holy Spirit give us strength to be true to you. Forgive our offenses, heal our hearts, direct our actions and give success to the work of our hands through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
