HOMILY FOR TUESDAY THE NINETEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GREATEST IN GOD’S KINGDOM

EZEKIEL 2:8-3:4; PSALM 119; MATTHEW 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

Today’s gospel presents us with the question Jesus addressed to his disciples; he said to them, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” Though the world is competitive; where we look out for the greatest and the smallest, heaven is not a competitive place. The paradigm for greatness here on earth is not the yardstick for greatness in heaven. And so, Jesus said to his disciples; “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt.18:3-4). Beloved, the long and short of Christ’s response is change. Are you full of pride? Are you honest? Where lies your trust?

In addition, Christ says; “Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven” (Matt.18:10). Children totally depend on the benevolence and care of others. Sadly enough, many parents and guardians abuse children. Many children today are victims of abuses; sexual, verbal, emotional and physical abuses. Respect children and do not despise them; for their angels continually see the face of God. Lastly, through this same verse Christ testifies to the prayer to “Guardian Angel”. How often do we still say this prayer?

 LET US PRAY

Angel of God, my guardian angel, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
