HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

PUT GOD FIRST

EZEKIEL 34:1-11; PSALM 23; MATTHEW 20:1-16

In Ezekiel 34:1-11, the shepherds of Israel neglected their duty and their flock turned to other gods. They prioritised their interest over God’s mandate. For this reason the Lord says he will shepherd his flock. The psalmist picks up this theme when it says “the Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” Beloved in Christ, other shepherds may fail; but the Lord is the Shepherd who never fails. When we share in his  role, let us always put him first.

In the Gospel reading (Matthew 20:1-16), the Lord is the Landowner who sends workers into his vineyard. He paid his workers equal amount regardless of the time they worked. This does not suggest injustice towards the workers but the generosity of the of the Landowner. Heaven is our goal and the reward of our labour is salvation. You may have been a Christian for ten years and another, just for a day. The reward of our labour is salvation. Stay focused, do not neglect your duty like the shepherds of Israel and you shall be rewarded.

While secular managers are guided by the principle of first come, first served; Jesus says “The last will be first, and the first, last” (Matt.20:16). This means that irrespective of the time of arrival anyone who puts God first shall never come last.

LET US PRAY

Lord as we work in your vineyard, help us to be diligent about the task you have given us. Teach us to be grateful for your gifts. Amen.
