STAY AWAKE
1 Corinthians 1:1-9; Psalm 145; Matthew 24:42-51
We are so familiar with the words “stay awake” that we don’t even bother to contemplate the reality that they communicate. Like a familiar alarm tune, we easily press the snooze button and keep sleeping. Many Christians are still sleeping in defiance of the alarming sound of salvation today.
Observing this recklessness, Jesus said to his disciples; “Stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming.” The Divine plan that Christ might come at an hour we do not expect leaves many of us nervous. If a date was slated many persons will plan their lives accordingly; even though a good number of persons will still be caught unawares. We see that already reflected in our attitude towards time today.
End time truth demands proper preparation not anxiety. Christ’s coming is not a disaster rather it is a joyful expectation. Therefore, as we await in joyful expectation the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ let us continue to deploy grace to sustain a worthy life. Conscious of this truth, Paul tells us in the first reading that we have been enriched with so many graces by God. The sacraments and the various prayers of the Church are means for obtaining graces for salvation. Do not take this sacred previleges for granted.
*Let us pray*
*Almighty, ever-living God, we make our prayer to you at morning, noon and evening: dispel every darkness from our hearts and homes and bring us to the true light, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.*
