HOMILY FOR FRIDAY TWENTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

 (MEMORIAL OF ST MONICA, 27/8/2022)

1 Corinthians 1:17-25; Psalm 33; Matthew 25:1-13

The parable of the Ten Virgins has been described as a “watching parable.” Ten virgins awaited a bridegroom; five brought enough oil for their lamps, they arrived early and were rewarded. They were wise! The other five had limited oil, they attempted to borrow but they were denied. They went for oil but arrived late. They were foolish!  So, you can be a virgin and still be foolish. You can be a virgin and still go to hell. Virginity is a priceless virtue but oftentimes, it is not about the virginity of the virgin but the character of the virgin.

The parable of the ten virgins has a clear eschatological theme. It is a call to watchfulness and  preparation for the last day. We must be vigilant. It also reminds us that there are certain things we cannot borrow. The foolish virgins could not borrow oil when they discovered they needed more. We cannot borrow virtue. We can always borrow shoes, wigs, trousers and the likes but we cannot borrow wisdom, virtue and holiness.

Lastly, today is the memorial of St. Monica, the patron saint for mothers and wives. She was an exemplary woman who persevered in faith and hope in spite of the tribulations in her family. She is well known for her earnest and passionate prayers for the conversion of her son Augustine. Through her intercession, we pray for families that are going through crisis may they find peace and fulfilment.

LET US PRAY

Father, have mercy and grant us the knowledge of salvation. Amen.
