HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE TWENTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

1 CORINTHIANS 10:14-22; PSALM 116; LUKE 6:43-49

“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit.” This passage discusses good and evil, which may be a challenging concept to grasp. Some people claim to be religious, but their actions show that they do not practice their beliefs.

Our character determines our actions, which reflect the true nature of our hearts. Even though we may try to hide the results of our acts from others, God cannot be deceived.

Jesus connects soundness of heart with good fruit. A tree is known by the fruits it bears. What kind of fruits do you bear? Who are you as a person? Or How would you characterize yourself? Are you luring people to God or driving them away? The fruits we bear are expressions of who we truly are.

Talking about the Idol feasts and the Lord’s Supper, Paul says; “my dear friends, flee from idolatry” (1Cor. 10:14). In verse 21 Paul adds, “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.” Beloved, we cannot serve two masters and bear good fruits.

LET US PRAY

Lord God, help us to have the actions, words, and wisdom necessary to bear good fruit. May our thoughts, words and actions be acceptable in your sight. Amen
