The King’s Heart
PROVERBS 21:1-6, 10-13; PSALM 119; LUKE 8:19-21
Proverbs 21:1 says “the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” God controls and holds the human hearts. God can work this way with whomever He chooses. God turned the heart of Pharaoh to Joseph; of Saul to David; of Nebuchadnezzar to Jeremiah and of Darius to Daniel. Therefore, do not be discouraged when you see the obstinacy and heartlessness of man toward God and His will. Man is not bigger than God. No king would reign forever; even Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years; God in His greatness continues to reign and He has power to do whatever He wills. Fear not, God is in control, He can guide and change hearts of any man.
Again, the immediate verses of Proverbs 21 (2-6) teaches us some morals. Verse 2 says “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,
But the Lord weighs the hearts.” Therefore, don’t always justify yourself. Learn to accept the truth in humility and faith. Moreso, righteousness and justice is more important to God than sacrifice. The way we treat our neighbours is more important than religious sacrifices and offerings. Let us learn to be diligent. Proverbs warns that the wicked shall be cast down to ruin while the plans of the diligent will lead to abundance. In line with this theme the response to today’s psalms prays; “Guide me, Lord in the path of your commands.”
Lastly, in the Gospel, Jesus says His family are all those who obedient to God’s will. Therefore, all those who do the will of the Father are His brothers and sisters. Let us nurture our relationship with Jesus by total and unconditional commitment to the Gospel like the saints.
