HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE THIRTY FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Watch out

Rev. 22:1-7; Psalm 95; Luke 21:34-36

The liturgical year concludes today, and the first Sunday of Advent begins tomorrow. Jesus points up the transitory nature of existence in today’s passage. He exhorts us to pay attention to pursuing our good objectives in this way so that we won’t be caught off guard.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Be on your guard; let not your hearts be weighed down with a life of pleasure, drunkenness and worldly cares, lest that day catch you suddenly as a trap. Beloved, we must be careful to avoid being tricked or getting into a precarious situation that will disqualify us on the last day. In this light, Matt.26:41 exhorts us saying “Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

In today’s first reading, a description of our heavenly home is provided. God is light and all those who shall make it to heaven shall live in never-ending light because the Lord will be shining on them. If we must live in that light we must quit the works of darkness now.

LET US PRAY

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.
