HOMILY FOR TUESDAY THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR 1

Isaiah 11:1-10, 11-14; Psalm 72; Luke 10:21-24

According to Isaiah, Jesse’s descendants will rule as kings and with God’s blessing. There will be wealth and tranquility under his rule. The Lord’s Spirit will rest upon him and bestow upon him knowledge, wisdom, power, and the fear of the Lord. Justice will prosper during his lifetime! This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus.

Luke’s Gospel affirms this; Jesus declared by the Spirit that everything had been given to him by the Father and that the Son was the only way to know the Father. As a result, in order to bring about justice, peace, and prosperity, we must understand him. He is the only way for us to understand the Father and his plan for us. Since Christ shows himself to children rather than the arrogant, knowledge of him requires both intellectual and spiritual humility.

Let us pray

Look with favour, Lord God, on our petitions, and in our trials grant us your compassionate help, that, consoled by the presence of your Son, whose coming we now await, we may be tainted no longer by the corruption of former ways. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
