Zechariah’s Song
When John was born, Zechariah’s tongue was loosed because John would go on to become the voice announcing the arrival of Jesus, the eternal Word.
Zechariah delivered God’s message while being filled with the Holy Spirit. The Benedictus is the common name for this message. It is a song of praise and thanksgiving for what God has accomplished for him. There are numerous similarities between it and Mary’s Magnificat. It has foundation in the Old Testament and the history of the people’s beliefs.
Zechariah’s Song speaks of the fulfilment of God’s promise to save his people. This promise is still valid for us. No matter what difficulties we may be facing, we may be rest assured that God will deliver us.
Additionally, the song mentions the realization of David’s house, as Nathan foretold would happen in the first reading, as well as the revelation of Christ’s redemptive mission.
Last but not least, the Church offers this song as a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the start of salvation, when Christ came to free us from the control of our enemies and give us the freedom to serve him courageously in holiness and righteousness.
LET US PRAY
Come quickly, we pray, Lord Jesus, and do not delay, that those who trust in your compassion may find solace and relief in your coming. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
