HOMILY FOR TUESDAY THE FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

Divine Authority

Hebrews 2:5-12; Psalm 8; Mark 1:21-28

In Capernaum, the epicenter of Galilee’s dominant system, on the Sabbath day, Jesus begins his teaching ministry in the synagogue. The gospel states that “He taught them as one who had authority”.

Authority is the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience. By the authority of his teaching Jesus freed the people from ignorance. By that same authority He freed the demoniac from satanic entanglements and diabolical bonds. “Who is this man that even unclean spirit obeys him?” The people wondered!

He is identified as Jesus in the letter to the Hebrews. He is the Son of God, who was flawless in all respects, not simply another prophet or holy figure. Beloved, since Jesus is the ideal Teacher and Healer, let’s beg him to enlighten our thoughts and set us free from the devil’s traps.

Lastly, the people who have been put in charge of us also exhibit this authority. And so, Rom. 13:1 says; “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” As long as the laws and decisions are in accordance with God’s will, let us obey them.

LET US PRAY

Father, let your light penetrate the hidden places of our hearts. May no sordid desires darken our minds, deliver us from the hands of the infernal spirit. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
