Many persons on the streets are not normal but you won’t know. Some are under serious mental stress, hard drugs and emotional torture that require attention; but unfortunately… who cares? Many schools, families, churches, offices and organisations are currently battling with mad leaders and directors.
In 2022 Taiwo Obindo, the President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN) stated that more than 60 million Nigerians suffer from mental illnesses. Given the population of Nigeria you can now imagine the level of madness in Nigeria.
Sadly, the situation of the nation’s mental healthcare is appalling; and as a matter of fact there is no healthcare centre that is actually appealing in Nigeria. Of the 60 million Nigerians who suffer from various mental diseases, only around 10% have access to proper care, leaving the vast majority without access to therapy. US once reported that one in five people aged 13 to 18 live with a mental health condition and half of all mental health illnesses emerge by age 14. These figures are rising by the day.
Untreated mental health issues in youths have long-term effects that will hinder their abilities to live fulfilled lives. If you love yourself, mind what you do. It is not enough to eat and drink, pay serious attention to the kind of substances you are consuming. Boys and girls out there are consuming to their own detriment. Consuming dirt for their own death. The amount of hard drugs and alcohol being smoked and consumed today already foreshadows how insane the future will be. Parents talk to your children, children talk to yourselves.
Moreso, there is also the wind of repercussion currently blowing, many young minds who delved into occult practices just to make money are currently living in regrets. Some are locked up in houses, some are roaming about in the streets; while few others are in herbal homes and churches.
Listen, there is a way that seems right unto a man but the end is death. Retrace your steps and rescue your future. No doubt, the economic ⛽ and other sociopolitical crises in this country can easily initiate mental illness. However, do not hesitate to protect your sanity.
And to all preachers, teachers, counsellors, doctors and even organizations; more focus and assistance are desperately needed to address our mental health issues. May God help us. 🙏
