The first reading presents us with the encounter between Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch. The Eunuch traveled to Jerusalem for worship, yet he was unfulfilled. He was studying the scriptures on the way home, but he couldn’t make sense of what he was reading. Suddenly, the Spirit guided Philip to his chariot; and after Philip explanation on the scriptures, the Eunuch believed and accepted to baptism.ย
Today, there are individuals like this Ethiopian Eunuch; they are reading the Bible on their own, in search of a deeper and more meaningful life. They have been to the temple for worship yet unfulfilled. It is our duty to bring a word of explanation to these individuals. Like Philip, we must teach the people to believe in the Scriptures; accept baptism and partake in the bread of life. Jesus says in today’s gospel โI am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.โ (John 6:51).
Lastly, the Ethiopian asked; “How can I, unless someone guides me?” How can we guide others unless we study? Beloved, let us make out time to study the Bible. ‘Nemo dat quod non habet’ (you cannot give what you do not have).
