HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (30/5/2023)

Selflessness

ECCL. 35:1-12; PSALM 50; MARK 10:28-31

“Give to the Most High as he has given to you.” The first reading calls us to honour the Lord generously. Do not appear empty-handed in the Lord’s presence; for all these things are due under the commandment.

A virtuous man’s offering graces the altar, and its savour rises before the Most High. A virtuous man’s sacrifice is acceptable; its memorial will not be forgotten. Beloved, let us make our offering just. We know how God has blessed us. What we offer does it reflect our financial strength? Are they appropriate or mistreat God’s presence?

The Bible says in 2 Cor. 9:7 God loves a cheerful giver. Do you give cheerfully or grudgingly? Are you reluctant or resentful about giving? Cheerful giving is not all about money but selflessness. In the Gospel, Christ encouraged selflessness, He says “whoever has left everything for the sake of the gospel will be repaid”. God rewards selflessness.

LET US PRAY

Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your Church may rejoice, untroubled in her devotion. Amen.
