HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (3/6/2023)

 Wisdom

 Sirach 51:12-20; PSALM 19; MARK 11:27-33

The first reading invites us to seek wisdom. Wisdom is defined as knowledge, and the capacity to make due use of it. Wisdom is a capacity of the mind that allows us to understand life from God’s perspective. Through wisdom a man is able to distinguish between right and wrong. Solomon encourages us saying; “Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them.” (Proverbs 4:5). Let us seek wisdom that we may be guided in all we do. Wisdom enables a man to overcome dangers when he meets them. Wisdom brings success; it is profitable to direct (Eccl 10:10).

King Solomon of the Old Testament is synonymous with wisdom. Wisdom is a gateway to spiritual to many Divine blessings. Solomon asked for wisdom yet he was blessed with riches, wealth, honor and victory over his enemies (1 Kings 3:8-10).

Similarly, the Gospel expressed the wisdom of Jesus over the folly of the chief priests and the scribes who questioned his authority. Jesus knew that answering their question would lead only to further argument. Then he applied wisdom. Sirach 2:13 says wisdom exceeds folly, just as light exceeds darkness. May the Lord give us the wisdom to know when, where and how to speak and act. May we find the wisdom to conquer our enemies.

Saints Charles Lwanga and his Companions, pray for us.

LET US PRAY

Father, we pray for enough wisdom, that we may be able to discern which path is right for us and which one we should avoid. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
