St Anthony of Padua
SALT AND LIGHT
2CORINTHIANS 1:18-22; PSALM 119; MATTHEW 5:13-16
Light and salt were precious and valuable commodities in ancient cultures. These two elements are still significant to human existence. So, when Jesus calls us light; he wants us to drive away darkness from the world. Then as salt, Jesus wants us to preserve the virtues of life.
Our world needs light that will guide it out of conflict and darkness. If we do not shine the world will remain in darkness. Christ wants us to shine! He says in the Gospel “Your light must shine in the sight of men”.
Let your light shine; we are baptized to shine. Paul says in the first reading; “God himself has anointed us and given us his Spirit”. Beloved, do not waste the anointing of God over your life. Let us shine and give meaning to our world.
The Church celebrates the memorial of St. Anthony of Padua today. He grew up in the radical disposition and spirit of Elijah. He was a light and a salt to his generation. Through his intercession may we find grace to follow Christ. St. Anthony, pray for us.
LET US PRAY
Father, bring your light and restoring presence to the dark places in our lives. Bring your hope to hearts that feel defeated. Bring your love and compassion to those in pain. Lord Jesus, let your light shine through us so that through our actions we may be salt for the earth and light to many. Amen
