Labourers (Part 2)
GENESIS 41:55-57, 42:5-7, 17-24; PSALM 33; MATTHEW 10:1-17
The Gospel reading presents us with the appointment and mission of the twelve. These men were labourers in God’s Vineyard. Yesterday we looked at some qualities of Christ’s labourers but today we shall focus on the instructions and our relationship with them. After their appointment they were given instructions. These instructions are of great relevance for us today regardless of environmental, political, economical and cultural circumstances.
Labourers or missionaries today must inculcate the spirit of detachment, dedication, dependence on God and courage in the face of opposition. In the first reading, Joseph was sold into slavery yet he became the hope of his people in famine. We are the hope of many, so we must not allow our trials to consume or discourage us.
Today’s psalm (Ps.33 18-19) echoes God’s assurance; the Psalmist says “The Lord looks on those who revere him, on those who hope in his love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine.” He rescued Joseph and his people, ours will not be different if we don’t give up.
Lastly, as labourers or witnesses we must understand that God’s ways are not ours. We must learn to do away with own own desires and align with the Divine will. The brothers of Joseph did not mean well for Joseph but God turned it into blessings. Psalm 33 10-11: adds “God frustrates the designs of the nations, he defeats the plans of the peoples. His own designs shall stand for ever, the plans of his heart from age to age”. In all things, let remain hopeful, for God’s plans and deeds are ever timely and always the best.
LET US PRAY
Father, give us the grace to do your will. Help us never to be separated from you. In all trials, through the power of the Holy Spirit help us to prevail and win. In the name of Jesus, help us to overcome disappointment, fear, and doubt. Amen.
