The Ten Commandments.
Exodus 20:1-17/Psalm 19/Matthew 13:18-23
The Decalogue is “the Law given at Sinai”. This law is popularly known as the Ten Commandments. They speak of the greatest obligation (to worship only God), the greatest injury to a person (murder), the greatest injury to family bonds (adultery), the greatest injury to commerce and law (bearing false witness), the greatest inter-generational obligation (honour to parents), the greatest obligation to community (truthfulness) and the greatest injury to movable property (theft).
Basically, the Ten Commandments can be summed up in the word love, love for God and love for others. According to Deuteronomy 6:5, God commanded Israel, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Let’s be guided, keep the commandments and have peace.
The ten Commandments are considered essential for spiritual growth and serve as the basis for worship and social justice. Let us keep the law of the Lord; it is perfect, it revives the soul and it gives wisdom to the simple (Ps.19:8). Like good soil in the parable of the sower, those who keep God’s commandments will produce abundant harvest.
