HOMILY FOR TUESDAY THE SEVENTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1 (Alphonsus Liguori)

Be Alert

Exodus 33:7-11, 34:5-9, 28; Psalm 103; Matthew 13:36-43

The Gospel reading of today presents us with the parable of the Weeds: This parable shows that there are hostile and aggressive powers working in the world; seeking and waiting to destroy good seeds. 1Pet. 5: 8 says “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” We must be awake spiritually to ensure no one comes to plant evil in our faith, in our heart, in our family, in our children, in our church, and in our schools.

Just as Moses interceded on behalf of the people of Israel in the first reading, we must learn to intercede for ourselves and beseech God for mercy on those who perpetuate terrible deeds in the land.

Today the Church celebrates the memorial Alphonsus Liguori, he was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. A lawyer becomes holy! There are possibilities for those who are in Christ Jesus. With his many attributes, skills and talents Alphonsus preached the gospel message. Therefore, let us witness to God through our talents, offices and gifts. St Alphonsus, Pray for Us

LET US PRAY

Almighty Father, have mercy and save us. By the power of Holy Spirit help us to overcome the evil deeds of our days. Fill us with life and peace through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
