HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR 1

INSATIABLE DESIRES

Numbers 11:4b-15; Ps.81; Matthew 14:13-21

The first reading describes some of the challenges and frustrations Moses and the Israelites experienced as they journeyed in the wilderness toward the promised land. Moses became irritated when the Israelites complained about having only manna to eat and how they preferred their life of servitude under the Egyptians to their life of freedom under God. We often frustrate the efforts of our caregivers, parents, leaders and helpers. Sometimes, we just have to turn our complaints into compliments.

In Exodus 16 the Israelites complained about the lack of food; in Numbers 11 they complained about the lack of variety, and in Numbers 21 they were again dissatisfied with manna. Simply said, this sequence demonstrates how insatiable human desires are. We frequently act inconsistently with God’s laws and quickly forget his rewards.

Rather than complaining, the gospel reading encourages us to share our gifts for the benefit of all. The little boy in the gospel brought forth what he had, and it was multiplied; they all ate to their satisfaction, and they had left over. Beloved, if you don’t bring your gift forth, it will not go forth. Bring forth your skills, and Jesus will spring them forth! Do not despise the little things you accomplish. They may go a long way towards making our lives beautiful.

LET US PRAY

Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
