The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
Judges 9:6-15; Psalm 21; Matthew 20:1-16
The gospel presents us with the parable of the workers in the vineyard. In this parable, the landlord pays his workers an equal amount irrespective of the time spent in labour. This does not suggest injustice towards the workers, but rather the generosity of the manager.
God is the best manager, and the reward for our labour is salvation. While secular managers are guided by the principle of first come, first served, Jesus says, “The last will be first, and the first, last” (Matt. 20:16). This means, irrespective of the time of arrival, anyone who puts God first shall never come last.
On the other hand, the first reading speaks of the fable of Jotham, which depicts how responsible persons hand up leadership duties to the irresponsible, resulting in poor leadership. If we neglect our responsibilities, others will wreck the system. Be responsible, put God first, and you will not come last.
LET US PRAY
Father, as we go about our duties help us to be diligent. Give us the grace be grateful for your gifts and not be envious of others’ benefits. Amen.
