HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

Hypocrisy

Ruth 2:1-3, 8-11, 4:13-17; Psalm 127; Matthew 23:1-12

In the gospel reading, Jesus condemns the Scribes and Pharisees for not practicing what they preach. If we do not practice what we preach, then we are not in any way different from the Scribes and Pharisees.

Practicing what we preach is a necessity for fulfilling the Lord’s mandate. If our actions are not in consonance with the faith we profess, then we are literally a walking contradiction. To avoid hypocrisy, we must practice what we preach, carry out self-examination, and be compassionate.

Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law battles are common marital issues. Today’s first reading presents us with a special example. Ruth was rewarded for her kindness to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Let us imitate her.

LET US PRAY

Father, have mercy and save us from deceitful living. Holy Spirit strengthen us and help us to live in harmony with your promptings, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
