HOMILY FOR MONDAY, THE TWENTY-EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Seek Jesus

Romans 1:1–7; Psalm 98; Luke 11:29–32

When the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say, ‘This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.”‘ Where signs are displayed, you see the crowd increasing. Many churches today are not different from traditional shrines. Many prophets are busy with divination, incantation, and enchantment, dicing oracles to predict events and manipulate them.

True Christians should guard their faith. You don’t need to see the future before you can live in it. There are forces, no doubt, but have faith with a blend of reason, be of good conduct, and you will prevail over situations and attacks.

Any Christian seeking a sign is wicked. The only sign we have is Christ’s resurrection, which was captured in Jonah’s experience. Reassurance is all we need to know, and on the basis of that, we can ascertain our hope and future! Paul says, “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless, and so is your faith” (1 Cor. 15:14).

“Something greater than Jonah is here!” Jesus is greater than Jonah. Ninevites acknowledged Jonah’s authority and turned to God in repentance. This generation needs a genuine conversion. We have a duty to preach the good news as Paul did and to bring the message of salvation to all people so that they may change their ways, as did the people of Nineveh.

Let us pray.

Father, have mercy, strengthen us, and bless us with faith and serenity.
