HOMILY FOR TUESDAY, THE they WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Romans 8:18–25; Psalm 126; Luke 13:18–21

Today’s gospel presents us with two parables: the Parable of the Mustard Seed and the Parable of the Yeast. These two parables deal with small but modest beginnings and triumphant conclusions. The mustard seed is small, but it grows into a big tree. So it is with the Kingdom of God. It started with the twelve disciples but is celebrated all over the world today.

Again, the mustard seed does not become a big tree overnight. Be patient with whatever you do; with time, you will grow higher, bigger, and greater. The seed may be small, but don’t give up because it grows. We always want to start big. Learn from this parable and the principles of life how to be patient and hopeful.

Similarly, bread is flat unless yeast is added to make it rise. A little effort can make a significant difference. Yeast acts like grace; it brings about an increase. Do not be discouraged by humble beginnings. Be consistent and make sincere efforts daily, and you shall be blessed with a miraculous increase.

St. Paul says in the first reading that the sufferings of this present life are nothing compared to the glory that is to be revealed at our resurrection. There is no growth without hardship and struggles. Therefore, we must learn to work and be patient for the manifestation.

Let us pray.

Father, help us to be patient and walk in your ways. Bless the work of our hands with prosperity, and grant salvation to our souls. Amen!
